How Do I Get My Drivers Licence in QLD?

Getting your licence can be confusing, but we've got you covered. All the information you need is on this page, from getting your L’s to obtaining your P’s.

In Queensland, you must be 16 years old to apply for your learner licence. The test can be completed online using PrepL or by visiting your local Department of Transport to sit the written test.

Under QLD law you must be 16yrs old and pass the test provided by the state government. This can be done online or in person by successfully completing PrepL or the written test.

PREP L

Using PrepL is really easy and you can start using it a month before your 16th birthday!! All you have to do is create an account – LINK below. Once you have an account, just follow the prompts to complete your online test. Once you have passed the test, visit your local Department of Transport and Main Roads with your I.D to collect your learner license. If you are under 25 and pass the written test you will need to complete 100 hours of driving. You can obtain a logbook from Department of Transport and Main Roads or you can download the App. LINK below. You are now officially on the road to getting your license.

WRITTEN TEST

You can sit the written test at your local Department of Transport and Main Roads. To sit the written test you must be 16yrs old. You will need to bring:

  • A completed driver licence application form
  • Identification
  • The written test fee and licence fee
If you are under 25 and pass the written test you will need to complete 100 hours of driving. You can obtain a logbook from Department of Transport and Main Roads or you can download the App. LINK below. You are now officially on the road to getting your license.

Logbook App Download

During the course of getting your license, you must record 100 hours of supervised driving, this includes 10 hours of night driving. Night driving is between sunset and sunrise.

All driving lessons must be supervised by a valid open licence holder, the license must be the same class as the one you are learning. They also must have held a valid licence for at least a year.

GETTING YOUR P’s

10 hours of driving lessons with Learner Lessons Driving School will count as triple time:

 

1 hour lesson = 3 hours in your logbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • q:How long does logbook approval take, and what if it's rejected?

    a: Allow up to 12 working days for the Department of Transport to receive your logbook/app and calculate your hours. Once complete the Department of Transport will send you an email with the status of your application. If for some reason your application was not approved, the email will contain what must be corrected for approval.

  • q:When Can I Book My Practical Test?

    a: Before you take the practical test, you must be 17yrs old and held your learner licence for a year. You will also have completed the required 100 hours in your logbook or app. Once you have finished logging your hours, your logbook must be submitted to the Department of Transport. After the Department of Transport receives and approves your logbook, you can proceed to take the practical test.
